The Founder and Chairman, Board of Trustees of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, has taken a swipe at Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Elder Buba Galadima, accusing them of attempting to take over a party they “never built.”
In a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday in Lagos, Aniebonam questioned the intentions and actions of the duo, faulting their recent letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) seeking approval to conduct congresses and a national convention for the NNPP.
“What is really wrong with Kwankwaso and Galadima and their quest to continue struggling over what does not belong to them?” he asked, describing their moves as morally questionable and politically insensitive.
Aniebonam, who narrated the events leading to Kwankwaso’s emergence as the NNPP’s presidential candidate in 2023, recalled that the former Kano governor had sought the party’s platform through a delegation led by Galadima, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, and Prof. Sam Angwe. According to him, the party granted Kwankwaso the opportunity at no cost, including allowing members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement to contest various elective positions free of charge.
He noted that a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement was intended to expire after the 2023 elections and be reviewed thereafter. However, he alleged that Kwankwaso had secretly attempted to alter the party’s logo, colours, and constitution for personal gain.
“It is already in the public space that Kwankwaso went behind illegally to change the logo, colour, and constitution of the NNPP to his advantage. He wanted to hijack the party for his personal gain and tradership,” Aniebonam stated.
The NNPP founder added that the situation escalated when Kwankwaso’s group purportedly “expelled” him from the party he founded and registered with INEC in 2001—an action he described as the height of impunity and disrespect.
“The NNPP constitution does not allow any member to touch the founder, being a life member of the board,” he stressed, accusing Kwankwaso of being driven by greed, arrogance, and impunity.
Citing Kwankwaso’s political stature and influence—ranging from his past roles as Minister of Defence, lawmaker, and two-term governor, to his political closeness with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf—Aniebonam said the former presidential candidate was leveraging his resources to undermine the party’s structure.
Despite the crisis, Aniebonam expressed confidence that the NNPP would emerge stronger ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“NNPP shall come out stronger in 2027 as the party to watch, despite the antics of Kwankwaso and his group,” he asserted.
