Denmark Pledges Continued Support for Nigeria’s Maritime Development, Seeks Expanded Partnerships

The Government of Denmark has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s maritime sector while exploring new areas of economic collaboration.
The Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, Jens Jansen, made this known during a visit to the headquarters of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in Lagos, according to a statement by the agency’s Deputy Director of Public Relations, Edward Osagie.

Jansen noted that the bilateral relationship between both countries spans several decades, with the Danish government and private firms investing significantly in Nigeria’s maritime space. He said Denmark remains open to further cooperation, particularly in seafarers’ training and maritime security.

He also disclosed that Denmark intends to support initiatives such as the Ship-in-a-Box (SIAB) simulator project, implemented in partnership with the UNODC, aimed at building capacity for Nigerian maritime law enforcement officers, especially in Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations.

In his remarks, NIMASA Director-General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, appreciated Denmark’s sustained engagement with Nigeria, noting that Danish companies, including APM Terminals, had made notable investments in port infrastructure in Lagos, Onne and Kano.
Mobereola said collaboration between both countries has largely focused on maritime security capacity development and digital infrastructure enhancement, adding that the partnership can only deepen going forward.
