The management of Lekki Port has pledged full cooperation with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) following the appointment of Comptroller Hauwa Abubakar as the new Customs Area Controller of the Lekki Deep Seaport Command.
In a statement, Lekki Port Managing Director, Wang Qiang, described Abubakar’s redeployment as a recognition of her “hard work and outstanding performance” in previous roles. He expressed confidence that her wealth of experience and professionalism would enhance Customs operations at Nigeria’s first fully automated deep seaport.
“On behalf of the management of Lekki Port, we commend the Comptroller-General of Customs for appointing a thoroughbred professional to this office. Comptroller Abubakar is indeed a round peg in a round hole. We believe her expertise will drive operational efficiency, revenue growth, and profitability at the port,” Qiang stated.
While appreciating the contributions of the outgoing Area Controller, Qiang reaffirmed Lekki Port’s commitment to supporting the NCS in ensuring seamless trade facilitation, strict enforcement of regulations, and sustainable revenue generation.
In her remarks, Comptroller Abubakar commended her predecessor for laying a solid operational foundation and promised to build on existing gains. She described Lekki Port as “a pride of Nigeria and a key driver of maritime trade in West Africa,” noting its potential to transform the country’s trade landscape.
“Lekki Port stands out as a game changer for Nigeria’s maritime industry and the wider West African market. The Nigeria Customs Service will continue to provide the necessary support to unlock its full potential and drive revenue growth for the Federal Government,” she assured.
Situated in the Lekki Free Zone of Lagos State, Lekki Deep Seaport has become a critical gateway for international trade, attracting major investments since its commissioning. With the capacity to handle millions of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually, the port is projected to position Nigeria as a leading regional maritime hub.
Comptroller Abubakar’s appointment aligns with ongoing efforts by the NCS to boost non-oil revenue, facilitate trade, and improve operational efficiency at strategic gateways nationwide. Her leadership is expected to strengthen the partnership between Customs and port operators in driving national economic growth.
