The Federal Government has ordered the immediate suspension of the 4% Free on Board (FOB) levy recently introduced by the Nigeria Customs Service on imported goods.
The directive, contained in a circular dated September 15, 2025, and signed by the Permanent Secretary (Special Duties) in the Ministry of Finance, R.O. Omachi, followed widespread concerns from importers, trade experts, and business stakeholders.
According to the Ministry, the levy posed significant risks to trade facilitation, competitiveness, inflation control, and overall economic stability. Importers had complained of additional financial burdens that could worsen Nigeria’s business climate.
The suspension, government explained, will allow for broader consultations and a review of the policy framework to create a more equitable and efficient revenue structure that balances fiscal needs with economic growth.
