European Council President António Costa said on Friday that he is “strongly” urging Israel to reconsider its decision to seize control of Gaza City.
Costa warned that the operation would have “consequences” for relations between the EU and Israel.
According to him, the military escalation “undermines fundamental principles of international law and universal values.”
He noted that the EU has consistently condemned the “barbaric” October 7, 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas and once again demanded the unconditional release of all hostages still being held by the militants.
“The situation in Gaza remains dramatic, and the decision by the Israeli government will only further worsen it,” Costa said in the statement posted on X.
“The two-state solution remains the only sustainable, long-term solution for peace and security in Israel and the region.”
